We are open to candidates who are ordained or those with strong leadership in Christian education and children’s faith formation.

Who We Are:

At Central Presbyterian, our mission is:

To reach out and invite people to join in the life and love of Jesus Christ; to nurture them in the Christian faith, and to equip them to love and serve the world.

We are a warm, intergenerational congregation in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains—committed to nurturing faith in children and building up families in our community.

What We’re Looking For:

Primary Responsibilities

1. Ministry to Children (birth to fifth grade)

  • Lead an established and comprehensive children’s ministry program aligned with the church’s mission and values.
  • Develop and evaluate faith formation programs for children, including Sunday School, Acolytes, Children’s Church, Childcare, Wednesday After School Program, Children’s music programs, Vacation Bible School, Summer Fun, and seasonal events.
  • Create engaging, age-appropriate programming and faith formation opportunities for children to learn Scripture, prayer, worship, and service.
  • Demonstrate innovation and adaptability to age and ability-specific needs of the children in the church.
  • Integrate children meaningfully into the broader worship life of the congregation (e.g., children’s moments, worship leadership roles, family-friendly services).
  • Ensure all programs reflect the Reformed theological tradition and align with PC (USA) curriculum standards.
  • Coordinate and retain a thriving volunteer base.
  • Develop innovative opportunities for seasonal and community engagement events.

2. Ministry to Families

  • Provide care, support, and spiritual guidance to families in the church with children.
  • Foster strong communication and relationships with families, ensuring they feel supported in their children’s faith journey.
  • Equip and encourage parents as primary faith nurturers through workshops, small groups, and the sharing of resources.
  • Foster intergenerational connections between families and the broader church community.
  • Coordinate family-oriented fellowship events and service opportunities.

3. Volunteer Development and Leadership

  • Recruit, equip, and support a team of children’s ministry volunteers who share ownership of the ministry.
  • Supervise staff and volunteers involved in children’s ministries (e.g., nursery caregivers, Sunday School teachers, Vacation Bible School leaders), upholding the highest standards of safety protocols and standards.
  • Provide theological grounding and practical guidance to ensure volunteers model faithful leadership.
  • Promote a thriving and nurturing environment that adheres to all child protection policies and background check requirements.

4. Worship Leadership

  • Lead or coordinate children’s messages during Sunday worship service.
  • Assist in planning intergenerational worship experiences.

5. Care and Congregational Life

  • Offer care to children, families, and others in need, in coordination with the pastoral staff.
  • Support congregational milestones (baptisms, confirmations, dedications, etc.).
  • Attend and participate in Session, committee, and staff meetings as needed.

6. Administrative and Organizational Duties

  • In conjunction with the Administrative Committee, develop and manage the children’s and family ministry budget.
  • Maintain program materials, records, and communication with families.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and church safety and risk management policies.
  • Collaborate with communications staff to promote ministry activities through newsletters, bulletins, and digital media.
  • Serves as part of the church leadership team, collaborating with other pastors, program staff, and ministry leaders.

7. Collaboration and Mission Integration

  • Partner with youth ministry, adult discipleship, and mission teams to create continuity in lifelong faith development.
  • Support and participate in the overall mission and outreach initiatives of the church.
  • Represent the congregation in presbytery events and continuing education related to family ministry.

8. Other General Expectations

  • Demonstrate a mature and growing faith, rooted in the Reformed tradition.
  • Exhibit warmth, approachability, creativity, and strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all pastoral and administrative matters.
  • Participate in regular supervision and annual performance review.
  • Pursue ongoing personal and professional development.
  • Work flexible hours, including Sundays and evenings/weekends for special events.
