Job TitlePerforms a variety of semi-skilled and skilled work in the operation and maintenance of equipment, light, medium and heavy machinery, and tools used in construction, maintenance, and repair activity.Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.Participates in activities related to the use of construction equipment used in the construction of roads and bridges, including graveling, crack sealing, delineator post, reflector, fence, sign, cattle guard, culvert maintenance and installation, snow removal, crusher operations, bridge repair and construction, and landfill operations.Operates heavy equipment which may include crusher, blade, compressor, dozer, scraper, backhoe, loader, baler, snowplow, and semi-truck.Performs minor maintenance of trucks and equipment. Checks and services equipment with fuel, hydraulic fluids, oil, anti-freeze, and water. Checks tires, hoses, and belts.Follows safe and effective methods of machine operation. Monitors work sites for potential hazards.Ensures applicable standards and specifications are followed. Maintains cleanliness of work area and tools.Inspects loads for determination of disposal techniques and to monitor for special and hazardous waste.Weighs trucks, issues weight tickets, collects, and accounts for cash transactions.Maintains a variety of records. Completes activity records and reports.Performs related duties as required.Minimum QualificationsRequired Education and Experience:High school diploma (or GED equivalent)Up to one (1) year of experience in equipment operationAny equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilitiesRequired Licenses or Certifications:Class A driver's license with Air Brake EndorsementFlagging CertificateFirst AidDefensive Driving**Applicant must submit a 10-year motor vehicle record when applying**Competencies for Successful Performance of Job DutiesKnowledge of:English grammar, spelling, and punctuationPrinciples and practices of basic bookkeepingModern office procedures, methods, and computer equipmentBasic methods and techniques of construction, maintenance, and repairOperational characteristics of mechanical equipment and tools used in the area of work assignedRoad construction and/or maintenance of landfill operationsPrinciples of record keeping and reportingSafe work practicesSkill in:Interpersonal skills necessary to develop and maintain effective and appropriate working relationshipsPerforming a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different naturePerforming basic mathematical functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, and ratiosCommunication, both oral and writtenOperating heavy equipmentAbility to:Meet schedules and deadlines of the workUnderstand and carry out oral and written directionsAccurately organize and maintain paper documents and electronic filesMaintain the confidentiality of information and professional boundariesPerform semi-skilled maintenance, construction, and repair workPerform a variety of manual tasks for extended periods of time and under unfavorable weather conditionsMaintain hand tools and assist in the routine maintenance of equipment and vehiclesLearn to operate a variety of tandem axle vehicles and other equipment used in construction in a safe and effective mannerLearn to use and operate hand tools, mechanical equipment, and power tools and equipment required for the work in a safe and efficient mannerMaintain accurate records and complete activity reportsThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
