Job Description

Salary: $84,520 - 113,639 per year Requirements:

  • We need demonstrated civil engineering knowledge and the ability to apply it to transportation projects, including recommending sound technical solutions.
  • We need experience working on design-build construction inspection and quality management, with the ability to interpret complex plans, specifications, provisions, and standards.
  • We need proven leadership ability, including coaching, mentoring, evaluating staff performance, identifying training needs, and resolving personnel concerns.
  • We need strong skill in reviewing and analyzing contract plans, specifications, and cost estimates in line with project requirements and engineering standards.
  • We need effective written and verbal communication skills for explaining technical information to engineers, contractors, the public, and other stakeholders.
  • We need strong analytical and problem-solving ability, sound judgment, and close attention to detail.
  • We need the ability to work collaboratively with project offices, support teams, and other stakeholders to deliver coordinated results.
  • We need proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office tools such as SharePoint, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • We need a growth mindset and a service-focused approach.
  • We need a valid drivers license and the ability to operate state-owned vehicles.
  • We need the physical ability to lift and move materials or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • We need the ability to work in confined spaces, at heights of 50 feet or more, over water, and while using fall protection, life jackets, or boat travel.
  • We need the ability to move across rough, steep, and uneven terrain and climb ladders while using fall protection.
  • We need the flexibility to adjust work hours to meet operational needs, including night and weekend call-outs.
  • We need the ability to obtain WSDOT Construction Inspector Certification Program certification within 12 months of hire.
  • We prefer familiarity with transportation agency manuals, standards, specifications, and internal systems used in design, construction, or contract administration.
Responsibilities:
  • We perform quality verification and oversight for design-build construction activities.
  • We plan, schedule, direct, and monitor state and consultant oversight work.
  • We prepare quality verification audits.
  • We help develop and process change orders.
  • We review monthly progress payment invoices to confirm the percentage of work completed for various schedule items.
  • We drive a WSDOT vehicle to and from project sites.
  • We transport materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • We supervise assigned field construction staff responsible for quality verification oversight and field inspection duties.
  • We assign, review, and adjust staff work and schedules to maintain coverage and respond to changing workloads.
  • We provide leadership through coaching, mentoring, support, and direct assistance to assigned staff.
  • We review preliminary design and construction submittals and provide technical comments.
  • We monitor compliance with design-build requirements and participate in project task force meetings related to utilities, staging, quality, scheduling, and other project matters.
