Job Description

Concentric Methods is seeking an experienced Research Nurse toindependently provide support services to satisfy the overall operational objectives of the National Institute of Mental Health. The primary objective is to provide services and deliverables through performance of support services.

The total hourly pay for this exempt position is $55.00 for up to 40 hours per week. This rate represents the company's good faith and reasonable estimate of possible compensation at the time of posting. Duties include:

  • Facilitate screening patients for the projects that focus on adolescents with major depressive disorder.
  • Screen for studies on Major Depression:
  • Respond to parents and teens who contact NIMH expressing interest in research participation; explain the nature of the research studies; provide guidance on how to complete preliminary screening using secure, on-line methods or hardcopy responses to screening questions; provide log-in passwords and review files to ascertain that questionnaires have been completed.
  • Identify safety risks during assessment such as imminent suicidal ideation or behavior, ongoing substance abuse, psychosis, self-injury in response to interpersonal conflict, child abuse, recent physical or sexual trauma.
  • Conduct accurate preliminary evaluation of potential probands through telephone interviewing of parent, review of medical records, consultation with treating professionals, and consultation with NIMH medical staff, leading to acceptance for onsite evaluation or rejection with referral if indicated.
  • Conduct structured and semi-structured interviews with probands, and parents and siblings of probands; perform semi-structured interviews of parents to determine family medical and psychiatric history.
  • Conduct screening/baseline evaluations in collaboration with staff.
  • Administer and score a wide range of structured and semi-structured interviews (such as the SCID, the K-SADS and many others) to the child and adolescent probands and the parents of the probands.
  • Support for Research with participants in Screening, Longitudinal, and Treatment Studies:
  • Provide family support and crisis management services as needed.
  • Provide clinical support to patients and families throughout the time that they are participating in research protocols.
  • Provide referral to appropriate NIH resources and community services, when indicated.
  • Participate in the planning and execution of clinical research in the capacity of clinical support staff and Protocol Coordinator; support research assistants in the scheduling, follow-up, and tracking of participants in research.
  • Make recommendations for appropriate referrals, including Child Protective Services, psychotherapy, community services involvement, special education, or activity programs.
  • Document clinical contacts and findings; enter clinically relevant research information.
  • Participate in research group meetings and in the decision-making process regarding patient inclusion in the studies, patient and parent diagnosis, and patient and family management throughout participation in the research protocol.
  • Locate, evaluate and maintain contact with community organizations and facilities such as day treatment centers, clinics. Support MRI and MEG research procedures; evaluate the appropriateness of a subject for participation in brain imaging research; conduct a clinical assessment concerning the
  • degree to which a child, adolescent, or adult meets safety criteria for entering a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or magnetoencephalography (MEG) environment.
  • Assist children, adolescents, and adults receiving a MEG or MRI examinations; assist staff as they prepare patients for a brain imaging studies; alert the staff to safety concerns during this process; attach physiology monitoring equipment to a patient in an MRI environment.
