About This Role

The Staff Accountant at NFF independently performs recurring accounting activities that support the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of NFF's financial operations. Working within established accounting principles and internal controls, this role prepares and analyzes financial information, completes account reconciliations, supports the monthly close process, and resolves routine accounting issues with sound judgment. The Staff Accountant continues to deepen technical accounting expertise while identifying opportunities to improve processes and collaborating across the organization to ensure reliable financial reporting. NFF has offices in Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Oakland, and Los Angeles. This is a US-based remote role, with a strong preference for candidates within commutable distance to one of NFF’s offices. NFF has core business hours where we expect all staff to be available from 9 am to 5 pm local time, and occasional travel (20%) is required.

What You Will Do

Essential responsibilities for this role include, but are not limited to:

Accounts Payable & Transaction Processing (40%)

  • Process accounts payable invoices, expense reports, and payment requests accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Review invoices and supporting documentation for completeness, coding accuracy, and compliance with organizational policies and procedures.
  • Assist with weekly payment processing and vendor set-up activities.
  • Respond to internal and external inquiries related to accounts payable and payment status.
  • Maintain organized financial records and documentation in accordance with organizational practices and audit requirements.

General Accounting & Reconciliations (40%)

  • Prepare recurring journal entries and supporting schedules.
  • Perform assigned balance sheet reconciliations and research routine discrepancies.
  • Maintain accurate financial records within the accounting system.
  • Support month-end and year-end close activities by completing recurring accounting tasks and preparing related financial reports.
  • Assist with audits and other financial reviews by preparing documentation and responding to routine requests.

Financial Operations & Team Support (10%)

  • Support ongoing finance operations, process improvement efforts, and special projects as assigned.
  • Collaborate with Finance team members and cross-functional partners to support efficient financial operations and strong customer service.
  • Participate in training and opportunities to build accounting knowledge and professional skills.

Meetings and Other Duties As Assigned (10%)

  • Participate in internal and external meetings, training sessions, and cross-functional collaboration.
  • As work and community/client needs change, assignments, projects, and job duties may evolve in support of organizational priorities.

Who You Are and Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in accounting , finance, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education, training, and/or relevant experience
  • 2 years of relevant accounting, accounts payable, bookkeeping, or finance experience
  • Working knowledge of accounting principles, financial processes, and internal controls
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accuracy in transactional and financial work
  • Demonstrated organization skills and ability to independently manage recurring responsibilities and maintain confidentiality with sensitive financial information
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and familiarity with accounting or financial systems
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to identify, research, and resolve routine accounting discrepancies

Benefits and Compensation

NFF offers a generous benefits package that currently includes up to twenty (20) paid holidays/business closure days, three (3) floating holidays, flexible time off, group medical insurance with a funded health reimbursement account, dental and vision plans, life insurance and disability plans, a retirement plan with both a non-elective employer contribution (4%) and additional match contribution (up to 2%), a “work from home” fund, and flexible spending accounts to cover health, dependent care, and commuter costs.

This is a full-time role with an annual compensation range of $80,600 - $87,100 . A compensation offer is based on a candidate’s background and years of relevant experience, with consideration for internal equity. Because of our strong commitment to equity and growth, we do not negotiate compensation offers.
