Essex County College Human Resources Department The ESL Instructor will be responsible for planning and delivering high-quality English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction to adult learners. The instructor will create engaging lesson plans, assess student progress, and provide constructive feedback to support students in achieving their language learning goals. Additionally, the instructor will collaborate with colleagues to develop curriculum materials. Compensation This position offers a competitive hourly rate of $50.00 per hour. Supervisory Role Reports to Director of Extensions Centers and ESL Programs. Duties & Responsibilities Design and implement ESL lesson plans that cater to the diverse needs of adult learners. Foster a positive and inclusive learning environment that encourages student engagement and participation. Assess and evaluate students’ language proficiency, providing constructive feedback and support. Collaborate with the Director to develop and enhance curriculum materials. Stay current with best practices in ESL instruction and integrate innovative teaching methods. Communicate effectively with students, colleagues, and stakeholders to ensure a collaborative and supportive learning community. Class schedules may include day, evening, or weekend schedules. Physical Requirements Use strength to lift items needed to perform the functions of the job. Sit, stand and walk/move from place to place for required periods of time. Move between buildings. Speak and hear, communicate using telephone and/or walkie talkie. Use close vision, color vision, peripheral vision and depth perception along with the ability to focus vision. Communicate effectively in English, using proper grammar and vocabulary. Reach with hands and arms and use hands and fingers to handle objects and operate tools, including but not limited to computers, keyboards, telephones, calculators, and controls. Bend, twist, climb, push, pull, and lift. Additional Requirements Flexibility between Newark Campus and West Essex is essential to accommodate the diverse locations of our programs. Minimum Qualifications Demonstrated experience teaching ESL to adult learners, preferably in a diverse, multicultural environment. Bachelor’s degree in education, English, Linguistics, TESOL, or related field. Master’s degree preferred. ESL teaching certification (TESOL, TEFL, CELTA) is required. Preferred Qualifications Educational background and certifications aligned with ESL instruction.
