Job Description

Summary OUR MISSION: To fulfill President Lincoln's promise "To care for those who have served in our nation's military and for their families and survivors" by honoring men and women who are America's Veterans. Beginning September 27, 2025, Federal agencies will only accept resumes up to two pages in length to comply with the Merit Hiring Plan. Qualifications Applicants must meet all requirements by June 3, 2026. A specific length of training is not required; applicants must demonstrate training or experience sufficient to perform the duties. Evidence of knowledge, skills, and abilities must be supported by detailed resume descriptions. Applicants will be rated against OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. Key technical knowledge includes:

  • Locking device fundamentals and component parts: installation, internal structure, operating characteristics.
  • Understanding of commercially manufactured locks and their interrelationships with equipment (monitors, alarms, sensors) and security system integration.
  • Fabrication skills: welding, hand and power tools (grinders, lathes, milling machines, drill presses).
  • Interpretation of technical manuals, manufacturer’s diagrams/specifications, and design of part dimensions.
  • Shop math (fractions).
Additional qualifications:
  • Consultant advisory skills in locksmithing.
  • Experience with equipment assembly, installation, repair, blueprint reading, and technical practices.
  • Volunteer work (e.g., Peace Corps) is credited.
Duties Full range of work in installation, repair, maintenance, and modification of commercial locking devices used in doors, desks, safes, vaults, compartments, mobile equipment, and secured areas. Provide expertise, advice, and recommendations to management on appropriate locking devices and systems for specific security requirements. Attend seminars and review trade journals, catalogs, regulations, and manuals to maintain expert knowledge. Develop and maintain records, including data entry and updating key information in space files, lists of requirements, and installations. Coordinate work with personnel in other shops or trades. Develop and maintain a special key hardware system for use in special areas such as mental health facilities, meeting all special requirements. Carpentry tasks: alterations, remodeling, removal, and installation of partitions, additions to buildings, opening of walls for doors and windows, concrete formwork, roof rafter and joist layout, and stair fabrication. Read, interpret, and work from construction drawings and blueprints (common and complex) and oral instructions from the Unit Supervisor. Inspect and repair fire and smoke barriers campus‑wide. Work Schedule: Full‑time Monday‑Friday 7 AM‑3:30 PM; may be required for off‑hours emergency support. Position is AWS eligible: 8‑9 hour days, 1‑8 hour day, and one day off a pay period (Tuesday‑Thursday). #J-18808-Ljbffr U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs
